Shockingly true: "I lost my son to a tyre"

On November 23, 2003, my family's life was changed forever. My family and I were traveling in our 2003 Explorer from Miami to Ocala, Florida, after a day of shopping to prepare for our family's Thanksgiving holiday.

We left late Monday night and planned to drive through the night so the children would sleep during the trip. My identical two-year-old twin boys and I were sitting in the back seat. Christopher and Alex, my sons, were belted in their child seats. I was sitting in the rear seat with my sons. My fiancée and his brother were in the front.

We were driving along the turnpike in Palm Beach County when we heard a loud "boom." The right rear tire on the Explorer had separated. The Explorer suddenly veered out of control and began to roll over. I don't remember anything that happened after that until I woke up in intensive care several days later. The nurses and doctors told me that I had been severely injured, and that they had to

remove my spleen. I also had to have several surgeries in which they put rods and pins in me to fix my broken bones.

That was nothing compared to what else they told me: Alex, one of my sons, died during the rollover. Because of my injuries, the doctors would not release me from the hospital and I was unable to even attend Alex's funeral. - Christina Sagrista
